The island of Schiermonnikoog

"De mooiste plek van Nederlanden" - the most beautiful spot in the Netherlands - is the name given to the popular island of Schiermonnikoog - "Island of the Monks". It is the smallest of the five inhabited Dutch "Waddeneilands" and measures around 16 kilometers in length and 4 kilometers at the widest point. The island has about 900 inhabitants.

In 1989 the Wadden Sea and large areas of the island - i.a. Beaches, dunes, salt marshes and mud flats - designated as a national park and nature reserve. The island is also known as Bird Island. Observation points - some of which are covered - can be found in many places on the island.

Small historical and enchanting "island houses" invite you to stroll on the streets and paths lined with trees and hedges or to have a "kopje koffie" in the cafes of the only village of the same name on the island of Schiermonnikoog.

On the wide beaches there is the possibility of sunbathing, swimming in the North Sea or surfing or other activities. Swimming pool, riding stables and tennis courts are also available.

The local tourist center - VVV Schiermonnikoog (www.vvvschiermonnikoog.nl) - offers a variety of events, especially in the summer months and holiday periods, such as lecture and film evenings, painting courses, concerts, guided mudflat hikes, demonstrations by the local fire brigade and the KNRM rescue company (the current events are named on the website www.schierweb.nl).

Schiermonnikoog has a wide-ranging infrastructure: accommodations of all kinds, restaurants, cozy pubs - “so-called Brown pubs ”- the discotheque“ Toxbar ”, several galleries, pottery, a supermarket and other grocery stores, newspaper and bookstores - German national newspapers are available there in the summer and holiday periods -, drugstore, boutiques, bike rentals, etc. Medical care is provided by local doctors with an affiliated pharmacy (see www.schierweb.nl with all addresses and opening times).

Marie´s Huis

"Marie´s Huis" is an old, cozy island house with a fireplace room and a large garden in the middle of the old village. The house is detached, comfortably and cosily furnished and fully equipped.

The house is a non-smoking house. Pets are only allowed upon prior request and agreement. The bus stop to the ferry terminal is in the immediate vicinity of the house.

Directions

You can reach Schiermonnikoog from the Lauwersoog ferry port by boat after a 45-minute crossing. You must leave the vehicle at the Lauwersoog ferry port. The covered parking lot is located directly at the jetty and is chargeable - cash and card payments are possible.

We recommend using google maps to get to the Lauwersoog ferry port.

The boat connection to the island is independent of the tide and takes place at fixed departure times. The crossing with the water taxi is also possible.

The departure times of the ships and ferry prices can be found on the website of the Wagenborg shipping company: (www.wpd.nl).

Luggage is transported free of charge in the shipping company's luggage trolley on the crossing.

From the Schiermonnikoog ferry port you can reach the village, which is 5 kilometers away, either by bus or taxi. In the summer months you can rent bicycles directly at the pier (www.fietsenverhuurschiermonnikoog.com).

Schiermonnikoog has a marina, so you can also arrive with your own boat.
